Srinagar May 5: Peoples Democratic Party, Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday expressed grief over the death of Tehreek-i-Hurriyat chairman, Ashraf Sehrai who passed away in Jammu.

Taking to her Twitter handle, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir said, “Deeply saddened to know about Ashraf Sehrai sahab’s sudden demise. Like him countless political prisoners & other detainees from J&K continue to be jailed purely for their ideologies & thought process. In today’s India one pays a price with his life for dissent.

She further added that the least GOI can do ‘in such dangerous circumstances is to immediately release these detainees on parole so that they return home to their families.’

Sehrai, a lifetime aide of Syed Ali Geelani, died at a hospital in Jammu where he was in detention for the past year. He was 77.

Sehrai, who was lodged at Kot Balwal Jail since July 2020, was admitted at the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu after his health deteriorated earlier this week. He was facing detention under the Public Safety Act.(CNS)
