Srinagar, June 11 : Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti paid rich tributes to Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg on his 44th death anniversary, remembering him as one of the most influential architects of modern Jammu and Kashmir whose legacy continues to inspire generations.
Recalling his immense contribution to public life, Mehbooba Mufti described Mirza Afzal Beg as a visionary statesman, reformer, and champion of social justice whose commitment to the welfare of ordinary people left an enduring imprint on the region’s history.
“Mirza Afzal Beg Sahib was not merely a politician but a beacon of hope and dignity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. His foresight, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice transformed lives and laid the foundation for a more equitable society. His landmark role in implementing historic land reforms empowered the marginalized and ensured that the benefits of freedom reached the common people,” she said.
Mehbooba Mufti noted that as the first Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the architect of the landmark Big Landed Estates Abolition Act of 1950, Mirza Afzal Beg played a defining role in reshaping the socio-economic landscape of the region.
She further said that his life and work remain a source of guidance for those striving to uphold democratic values and social justice.
“Mirza Afzal Beg Sahib’s life reminds us that true leadership lies in uplifting the downtrodden and standing firmly with the people. His contributions continue to serve as a guiding light as we work towards restoring dignity, justice, and hope. His memory inspires us to work tirelessly for a future where every voice is heard and every citizen is empowered,” she added.
The PDP leadership also paid tributes alongside former minister and party Chief Spokesperson Dr. Mehboob Beg, son of the late leader, acknowledging the lasting legacy of service and public advocacy associated with the Beg family.
