Srinagar, Aug 01: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday condemned the killing of two migrant workers in Kulgam, terming the incident a serious security lapse and demanding a thorough investigation.

“I don’t have words to condemn it,” Mehbooba told reporters, expressing shock over the attack.

Questioning how militants managed to strike despite heightened security arrangements for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, she said the incident raised serious concerns about the security apparatus.

“There is so much security here. It is a security lapse and must be investigated. With such extensive deployment for the Yatra, why do such incidents continue to happen?” she asked.

Mehbooba also referred to the security crackdown following the Anantnag terror attack, claiming that thousands of youths had been detained and even elderly people had been booked on suspicion of being overground workers (OGWs).

“After the Anantnag attack, thousands of youths were detained. Even an 80-year-old was detained in the name of being an OGW. Despite all these measures, how could militants carry out such an attack?” she said.

The PDP chief called for a transparent investigation to identify the perpetrators and fix responsibility for what she described as a major security failure.

The Kulgam attack, in which two migrant workers were killed, has drawn widespread condemnation from political parties and civil society.
