Mehbooba throws open Kashmir University’s Kargil, Leh satellite campuses

Kargil, Aug 21 : Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti who is on a three day visit of Ladakh region inaugurated the two satellite campuses of University of Kashmir here.

The setting up satellite campuses at these two places was a long pending demand of the people of the area, given the inhospitable terrain of the area. Both the campuses are equipped with adequate facilities for teaching, residing and other facilities.

At Kargil, the Chief Minister was informed that the satellite campus, built at a cost of Rs. 29 crore, would have a student intake capacity of 150, initially in the subjects of IT, Arabic and Botany.

In her brief interaction with the students, Mehbooba Mufti announced that bus would be provided to ferry students from their areas to the satellite campus. She also directed introduction of subjects like Persian, Education and some skill development courses in view of their demand from the job market.

The Chief Minister also directed setting up of a Solar power plant, V-Sat and a DG set to meet the uninterrupted power supply to the campus. She said the campus would be made as active as possible.

Chairman, Legislative Council, Haji Anayat Ali; Minister for Education, Syed Altaf Bukhari; Minister for R&B, Naeem Akhtar; CEC, LAHDC, Kargil, Kachoo Ahmad Ali; Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Khursheed Iqbal Indrabi; executive councillors; officers of the university and district administration were present on the occasion.

Later, the Chief Minister visited Leh on the second leg of her Ladakh tour where she also inaugurated the Leh satellite campus of the Kashmir University at Phyang.

Built at a cost of Rs. 27.40 crore, the Leh satellite campus is spread over an area of 819 kanals of land. It has git separate buildings for classrooms, hostels, administration, arts and science streams.

The Chief Minister directed starting undergraduate courses at the campus which have a good demand from the job market besides courses on regional development, ethnography, geology etc. She also directed the Deputy Commissioner to work out a permanent water supply source to the campus.
