MeT warns of intense showers, gusty winds in several parts of J&K

he Meteorological Centre Srinagar has issued a nowcast alert for widespread rain and thunderstorms across Jammu and Kashmir over the next few hours.

According to the forecast, many areas in North and Central Kashmir, along with some parts of South Kashmir, Poonch, Rajouri, Banihal, Ramban, Reasi, Udhampur, Doda, Jammu, Samba, and Kathua are likely to receive spells of rain and thundershowers during the next 4 to 6 hours.

It said that some areas including Uri, Baramulla, Sopore, Kupwara, Bandipora, Badgam, Srinagar, Poonch, Rajouri, the Banihal-Ramban axis, Jammu, Reasi, Udhampur, Samba, and Kathua may experience intense rain showers with thunder, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h over the next 2 to 3 hours.

“There is a possibility of landslides and mudslides in vulnerable locations due to heavy rainfall.

Authorities have advised people to suspend Shikara rides and boating activities during intense showers or strong winds. The public has also been asked to stay away from loose structures, electric poles, and old trees for safety,” it said.

The weather department has urged people to remain alert and follow official updates.
