In a sorry state of affairs in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal, teachers impart education to over 200 students in two classrooms in a government school.

The school in question is Government Middle School Zeripora Kulan which falls in Hariganiwan Educational Zone of Kangan town.

The school is also without a headmaster. Over 8 teachers posted in the school told news agency that for the past couple of years they have been taking up the issue with the authorities but nothing changed.

“There are two rooms in the school building only while the roll is high. Now we are asking students to attend the school shift-wise. We know it will affect the students but we have no option,” said one of the teachers.

Due to the lack of space, teachers sometimes, take classes on the verandah. “Snow has not melted in this far-flung area yet. There is chill. We have no other option but to make students sit on the verandah,” the teachers said.

The school building also lacks any ground. “No sports activity takes place in the school as there is no playground. We hope this school will be shifted to a safer place where the building is spacious,” the teachers said and admitted that students, as well as teachers, suffer badly in this school.

“We can’t afford to send our children to private schools. We know the school lacks the basic infrastructure, proper accommodation, and playground, but we can’t do anything. We appeal to the authorities to provide a spacious building with a playground to the poor students,” a group of parents said.

When contacted, a senior district official assured that something will be done in the interest of the students. (KNT)
