Srinagar, Jul 01 : A minor boy drowned in the Jhelum River near Habba Kadal in Srinagar on Sunday, leaving his family and the neighbours in shock.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Numan Gowher, who had recently returned home from Darul Uloom where he was studying, was swimming in the river when he went missing.

A rescue operation was launched by police, SDRF, and other officials, but no trace of the body has been found so far.

SDRF official Abdul Rashid told KNO that the team has been searching for the body since yesterday but it remains elusive. Two deep divers from the SDRF department also entered the water to search for the body but were unsuccessful.

Numan’s father, Gowher Hussain, said his son was studying in a Darul Uloom and had recently come back home on holiday.

“My son had recently completed 10 days of Atikaf and was a pious soul,” Hussain said.

The family of Numan is urging the authorities to press additional teams of MARCOS to retrieve the body.

Meanwhile, women were seen wailing on the Jhelum shore of the new Habba Kadal, demanding action from the authorities.
