Mirwaiz placed under house arrest, barred from Bemina address

Srinagar, Jun 29 : Authorities placed Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Molvi Mohammad Umar Farooq under house arrest on Monday, preventing him from addressing a scheduled gathering at Imam Bara Bemina.

The Mirwaiz had been invited by Aga Syed Haadi to deliver a sermon on the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the battle of Karbala. However, security forces restricted his movement as a precautionary measure.

In a statement issued from his residence, the Mirwaiz reiterated his call for communal harmony and said the people of Kashmir have always stood for mutual respect and brotherhood.
