Srinagar, Jun 11 : Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Thursday welcomed the Delhi High Court’s decision to grant bail to human rights activist Khurram Parvez and hoped that all political prisoners and detainees awaiting legal resolution would also get relief.
In a post on X, the Mirwaiz said the bail granted to Parvez after years of incarceration was a “very welcome development” and acknowledged the suffering endured by him and his family during the period.
The Mirwaiz said the practice of re-arresting individuals in other cases after they secure bail defeats the purpose of justice.
Referring to the case of Shabir Ahmad Shah, he said such actions undermine the spirit of judicial relief and expressed hope that a similar course is not followed in Parvez’s case.
He also voiced hope that political prisoners, youth and hundreds of others who have spent years, and in some cases decades, behind bars awaiting legal resolution would receive relief and be reunited with their families.
The Mirwaiz prayed that justice prevails and that those separated from their loved ones are able to return to their families.
Parvez, a Kashmir-based human rights activist, was granted bail by the Delhi High Court in a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
