The murder of Raja of Indore and Sonam of Meghalaya on their honeymoon is not only a personal tragedy but also raises deep concerns at the social, moral and mental level. This crime presents a horrific picture of the mistrust and selfishness spreading in modern love and marriage relationships. Also, the image of tourist places like Meghalaya is affected. Such incidents demand emotional education, transparency in relationships and re-examination of the moral values of the society.

✍ Dr. Satyawan Saurabh

In the Indian social scenario, love, marriage and relationships have been considered sacred bonds. But when a tender, beautiful and trust-filled journey like honeymoon becomes a platform for murder, it is not just a crime, it hurts the conscience of the entire society.

The honeymoon murder case of Raja from Indore and Sonam from Meghalaya not only took the life of a young man, it also tarnished the image of the North East, raised questions on the tourism sector and most importantly – destroyed relationships based on the foundation of trust.

Indore resident young man Raja recently got married to a girl named Sonam. The newly married couple went to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. Amidst the beautiful valleys, tranquil lakes and hilly roads, something happened that no one could have imagined.

On the pretext of honeymoon, Sonam along with her lover planned to murder her husband and also executed it.

Initially, Raja’s disappearance was considered an accident. But when the police further investigated, mobile location, chats, bank transactions and CCTV footage came to light, then the whole conspiracy was exposed.

The question is why does a newly married woman do this? The answer is not easy, but it is important to think about it. This case is not just a personal betrayal, it is also the result of the changing mentality of the society, in which haste, greed and opportunism have replaced patience, communication and dedication in relationships.

Sonam was already in love with another man, and married Raja only due to family or financial constraints. But even after marriage, she did not leave her lover, rather she made a plan to get rid of her husband.

In today’s era, relationships start with Instagram and Snapchat and end at Crime Patrol or the police station. Emotional depth, time to understand each other and the process of testing have become almost non-existent.

The culture of haste and social pressure regarding marriage does not give the young man and woman time to understand their own desires and relationships. The combination of emotional immaturity, self-centred decisions and irresponsibility towards relationships gives rise to incidents like this murder.

This incident also affected the image of beautiful tourist places of Meghalaya like Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, Umgot River etc. Some users on social media started calling it “Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder Case”, which is creating an atmosphere of unnecessary suspicion and fear towards the North East states.

But the question is: can a woman’s personal criminal conspiracy defame an entire region? The answer is no. This is the same mentality that sees a Muslim criminal and comments on an entire religion, or blames an entire caste for one Dalit. This thinking is as dangerous as the incident itself.

Marriage is no longer a compromise, it is becoming a deal.

Love is no longer dedication, it has become selfishness.

And trust is no longer an emotion, it is a business-like behavior.

The way Sonam planned and murdered her husband shows that cruelty is no longer being committed through weapons, but also through relationships.

The media covered the incident in a sensationalist manner.

The title came –

“Honeymoon becomes a murder spot”

“The bloody planning of the unfaithful wife”

“The king is gone, Sonam laughed”

But the real pain behind these headlines, the grief of Raja’s parents, and the ironies created in society were almost absent from discussion.

The matter quickly became the subject of memes and jokes on social media too —

“The entire North East got defamed because of Sonam’s infidelity.”

“Make police verification mandatory before going on honeymoon.”

This is a mockery of a human tragedy in the name of comedy.

Some may say that this is an isolated case. But the truth is that such relationship-related crimes are on the rise.

Somewhere the husband is beating the wife for dowry.

Somewhere the wife is murdering her husband in connivance with her lover.

Somewhere both of them together kill the children.

All these are indications – that our society is somewhere moving towards emotional degradation, social instability and moral disintegration.

In such a situation, the question now is of solution.

In schools and colleges, there should not only be talk about career or degree, but there should also be discussion on emotional intelligence, understanding of relationships, art of communication and responsibilities of married life.

Just like there is a health check-up, psychological counselling should be mandatory before marriage.

Social media must shoulder the responsibility of presenting such incidents with compassion, not sensationalism.

Families need to become communicative so that youth can openly share their concerns.

When a young woman kills her husband, we call her a “witch”, a “murderer”, “unfaithful”—and rightly so, if she is guilty. But do we ever think of the thousands of daughters who die due to dowry, rape, or violence?

Will we look at crime only in terms of gender or in terms of principles and sensibilities?

The murder of the king is not a filmy suspense, it is a reality.

A mother lost her son, a sister lost her brother and a family’s happiness was snatched away.

On the other hand – a state got defamed, and the entire tourism sector was put into question.

We should not look at this incident as just a crime, but as a social warning. It tells us that the time has come when we will have to teach not only how to make relationships, but also how to maintain them.
