Legislators from the National Conference (NC) and Congress on Thursday staged a silent protest inside the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, demanding the release of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Mehraj Malik.

The protest took place ahead of the commencement of the Assembly proceedings, as members sought to draw attention to what they termed as an assault on democratic values.

The MLAs held placards reading “Respect the Vote, Respect the Voice, Free Mehraj Malik” and observed a brief sit-in within the House premises.

They said the move was aimed at reminding the government of its responsibility to uphold the sanctity of the people’s mandate and protect the rights of elected representatives.
