No night-long prayers were held on Shab-e-Meraj in any major mosque or shrine in Kashmir in view of Coronavirus threat.

Shab-e-Meraj is observed on 27th of Rajab of Islamic lunar calendar every year. Every year, the biggest congregational on this occasion was traditionally witnessed at revered Hazratbal shrine here where thousands of devotees would assemble. However, no such observation was held at the shrine this year.

Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Wakf Board had Saturday announced suspension of celebrations and congregational prayers on Shab-e-Meraj in view of threat of the contagious Coronavirus.

Secretary Wakf Board, Showkat Beigh said no celebrations or night-long prayers were held at shrines and mosques affiliated with the Wakaf Board.

The Board has also suspended regular prayers in shrines, mosques affiliated to it.

“There will be no displaying of the holy relic also which as per tradition was done on the next day and Friday following Shab-e-Meraj at Hazratbal shrine,” he said.

“It is our collective responsibility to control the virus by following preventive measures and health advisories being issued by the authorities from time to time,” Beigh said while thanking the devotees for adhering to the Wakf Board directions.

Pertinently, the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema Jammu and Kashmir had also issued similar advisory to people.

J&K’s Grand Mufti Nisar-ul-Islam had Saturday asked the people to avoid religious gatherings and other ceremonies including weddings and condolence meetings.
