Srinagar, December, K Pen: Amid widespread speculation and misinformed commentary, it has been clarified that there was no proposal or discussion regarding increasing the VAT on Pashmina shawls to 28%. The concerns surrounding a potential tax hike had sparked apprehension among artisans and stakeholders in the handicraft sector.
Addressing these speculations, officials stated, “We had gone to Jaisalmer fully prepared to defend the interests of our shawl weavers and handicrafts persons. However, the defense was not necessary, as no such proposal was tabled.”
The clarification has brought relief to the handicraft community, which feared that a higher VAT rate could negatively impact the sale of the iconic Pashmina shawls, a symbol of Kashmiri craftsmanship and heritage.
This reassurance reaffirms the government’s commitment to supporting artisans and preserving traditional industries integral to the cultural and economic fabric of the region: Kashmir Pen
