Retirement is a natural phenomenon, and an important phase of life, bringing with it many challenges in terms of adjustment and changes in life, self-esteem, acquaintances, and vocation. Leaving the job at a specific period of time after putting in some number of years, that are productive years or after attaining an age of 60 in the public services.
Working men often look forward to retirement as on long vacation but it is a really very different. It is a permanent change in-status with important effects on a person’s self-image as well as his daily schedule.
WHAT CAN ONE DO
If retirement is preplanned by realistic anticipation and planning, it can mark a happy and healthy new chapter of life/golden period.
Three major changes accompany retirement; The loss of major portion of income (those with pension benefits) or the loss of work relationship, and the loss of identity as a public servant/worker. A successful retirement requires that you anticipate all three and plan accordingly. The need for financial planning is obvious. Not so obvious, but as important, is the need to build relationships to replace those at work. It is also important to include your spouse in the process; your retirement is also an adjustment for her too. Likewise, a man should cultivate interest and activities to make the leisure of retirement as rich and rewarding as the challenges of work.
KEY TAKE WAYS
It’s Best to plan ahead to ensure a successful and happy retirement, but it is not just financial planning that is important.
Research shows that retiree who stay somewhat active with planned activities tend to be happier than who do not..
Socializing, working part time, volunteering, and of course exercising are all activities than can positively impact life during retirement.
So the key is gradual transition, ideally extending over a period of years. Men should think of retirement as a career change, like a change of season, not the end of the productivity, people who develop hobbies, interests and relationships in advance should be able to anticipate retirement with enthusiasm, not with fear. Above all, perhaps men should head the life style lessons that can make those golden years shine. Diet, exercise, social activities, good medical care, travel head the list.
Many retirees, particularly older ones have a number of different medical problems, and they may find it difficult to sort out the long and short term impact of various conditions. For your part, be sure to tell your doctor what health issues most affect your day to day well being.
Men who stay healthy and age successfully will have the physical and mental resources to enjoy retirement. And in turn, mental stimulation and physical activity should keep them healthy and happy during their life’s new adventure.
