Srinagar: National Conference vice president and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday firmly rejected calls for separating Jammu from the Union Territory, calling such demands irresponsible and politically motivated.
Taking a swipe at BJP leader Sunil Sharma, Abdullah said efforts to create regional divisions were aimed at diverting attention from pressing public issues. He warned that stoking regional sentiments could damage the social and political harmony of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Further division of Jammu and Kashmir will only weaken the region and create new fault lines,” Abdullah said, stressing that people were more concerned about livelihoods, rising prices, and the restoration of democratic rights.
He urged political leaders to act responsibly and focus on governance, development, and public welfare rather than engaging in rhetoric that fuels discord.
The National Conference leader reiterated his party’s stand in favour of unity and cautioned that such statements could have serious implications for peace and stability in the Union Territory.
