SRINAGAR 31 Jul : The Supreme Court on Friday disposed of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s divorce case after he and his estranged wife, Payal Abdullah, informed the court that they had reached a settlement.
A bench of Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe accepted the settlement after senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Omar Abdullah, told the court that the matter had been resolved and sought disposal of the case on the agreed terms.
The bench accordingly disposed of the long-pending matrimonial dispute.
Omar Abdullah had approached the courts for divorce in 2016, citing irretrievable breakdown of marriage and alleging cruelty. His petition was rejected by the family court and subsequently by the Delhi High Court, which held that the allegations had not been sufficiently established. He then challenged the High Court’s decision before the Supreme Court.
The apex court referred the matter to mediation in August 2024 after both sides sought the intervention. The case was adjourned in January 2025 to allow the mediation process to continue.
Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah married in 1994 and have been living separately since 2009.
