Srinagar, 19 Apr : The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah on the occasion of World Heritage Day called for the preservation and protection of the region’s rich cultural heritage, emphasizing the importance of not only visiting heritage sites but also understanding their historical and cultural significance.
In a press statement issued from the party headquarters, Nawa-e-Subha, Dr. Farooq highlighted that Jammu and Kashmir remains a vibrant center of cultural heritage. He noted that the region has historically been a meeting point of great civilizations, owing to its proximity to the ancient Silk Route. This confluence of diverse cultures and artistic traditions, he said, has given rise to a unique legacy of art, craft, and architecture that is yet to receive the full global attention it deserves.
Dr. Farooq stressed that tourism promotion should go beyond showcasing the region’s scenic landscapes, such as its mountains and valleys. Instead, he urged the government and concerned departments to actively promote cultural tourism by highlighting the region’s magnificent forts of Jammu, splendid shrines of Kashmir, museums, mosques and temples.
He remarked that Jammu and Kashmir offers immense opportunities for those interested in archaeology, heritage, and culture, and called for focused efforts to bring these assets to the forefront.
He also appealed to the government to ensure the protection of heritage sites from natural disasters, including fires and other potential hazards. Emphasizing the need for proper evaluation and management, he called for systematic preservation and safeguarding of shrines and other historic structures.
Furthermore, Dr. Farooq urged the School Education and Higher Education departments to incorporate heritage site visits into their curricula and extracurricular activities, so that younger generations develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of the region’s cultural legacy.(KNS)
