Tribute Paid to the Eminent Urdu Poet and Educationist for His Contributions to Literature

Srinagar | October 23,2025 : A one-day literary seminar was held today at Tagore Hall, Srinagar, in memory of the distinguished Urdu poet, teacher, and thinker Saifi Sopori. The event brought together prominent poets, writers, critics, researchers, and literary figures from across the Valley.
The inaugural session was presided over by noted educationist and intellectual Prof. Nazir Ahmad Malik, while former Chief Education Officer Rafi Ahmad Masoodi graced the occasion as the chief guest. Also present were Prof. Ayaz Rasool Nazki and Dr. Rafiq Masoodi, former Secretary of the Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages.
The event began with a warm welcome by Saleem Saalik, Editor of Sheeraza Urdu, who, in his welcome address, said that the Academy remains committed to highlighting the contributions of literary personalities like Saifi Sopori. He emphasized that such seminars are an excellent means of connecting the younger generation with their rich literary heritage.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Ayaz Rasool Nazki observed that Saifi Sopori’s poetic legacy expands the intellectual dimensions of Urdu ghazal. He described Sopori as a poet of modern sensibility who expressed themes of human relationships, empathy, and truth in delicate poetic tones. Despite being rooted in classical tradition, his poetry resonates deeply with the spirit of the modern age.
Several scholars, including Dr. Nazir Azad, Ayaz Rasool Nazki, Shaukat Shafi, Hasan Anzar, and Prof. Nazir Ahmad Malik, presented detailed papers on Saifi Sopori’s life and literary achievements. The speakers stressed that Sopori’s poetry should not be viewed merely through romantic or intellectual lenses, as his work also reflects the social consciousness of his era.
In his presidential address, Prof. Nazir Malik remarked that Saifi Sopori introduced a new wave of moral, spiritual, and intellectual awareness into Urdu literature through his poetry. “His verse is not merely a celebration of language but a living philosophy of life, inviting humanity to understand self-awareness and the beauty of existence,” he said.
The chief guest, Rafi Ahmad Masoodi, described Saifi Sopori as “a beautiful blend of knowledge and art.” He said Sopori was not only a teacher but “an institution in himself,” inspiring countless students. “His poetry carries the fragrance of Kashmir—its land, culture, and humanism,” he added.
Expressing his thoughts, Dr. Rafiq Masoodi stated that Saifi Sopori gave Urdu poetry a new direction, balancing respect for tradition with a flair for innovation. “His ghazals embody deep philosophical insight and articulate the complexities of human emotion,” he said.
The second session featured a tarhi mushaira (themed poetry recitation), presided over by celebrated poet Rafiq Raaz, with Rukhsana Jabeen and Shabir Ahmad Shabir as distinguished guests.
Prominent poets who recited their verses included Rafiq Raaz, Rukhsana Jabeen, Shabir Ahmad Shabir, Shafi Shadab, Sagar Sarfaraz, Ashraf Adil, Tanveer Tahir, Ahmad Manzoor, Gulzar Jafar, Rashid Azmi, Parvez Manus, Athar Basheer, Ahmad Raees, Sabir Nausheri, and Ashar Ashraf. Their poetry on the given verse was warmly applauded by the audience.
The seminar was ably conducted by Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Lone, who moderated the proceedings with eloquence and scholarly finesse, also sharing a few thoughtful reflections on Saifi Sopori’s literary stature.
The event successfully celebrated the life, poetry, and intellectual legacy of Saifi Sopori while inspiring the younger generation to reconnect with the luminous tradition of Urdu literature.
