The issue of suicides, including tragic incidents like jumping into the River Jhelum particularly among females in Kashmir, is a complex and deeply concerning oneSuicide, particularly among women, is a deeply troubling issue that challenges the very fabric of any society. In Kashmir, a region traditionally known for its modest, resilient, and god-fearing society, the rising trend of women ending their lives by jumping into the River Jhelum is both alarming and heart-wrenching. While fencing vulnerable bridges, like those over the River Jhelum, can be a preventative measure, it is not a comprehensive solution. (Div.Com) It’s crucial to address the underlying causes that lead individuals to consider such drastic actions. Understanding these factors and where society has failed can help identify responsibilities and potential solutions.Kashnir being Muslim majority state, knowing suicide is forbidden still peopel underatke this patht, why? this question always baffles me.?
This tragic phenomenon prompts a critical examination of the underlying causes and the broader societal failures that may have contributed to such acts of desperation
Understanding the Root Causes:
- Social and Cultural Pressures:
Kashmir’s traditional society has long upheld values of modesty, resilience, and tolerance, especially among women. However, these values can sometimes translate into overwhelming social and cultural pressures. Women are often expected to conform to strict societal norms, maintain family honor, and uphold moral standards. The pressure to marry, bear children, and manage household responsibilities can be immense, leaving little room for personal aspirations or emotional well-being. For some, the inability to meet these expectations may lead to feelings of inadequacy, worthlessness, and isolation. - Mental Health Stigma and Lack of Support
Mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, are significant contributors to suicidal behaviours. However, in Kashmir, as in many other traditional societies, mental health remains a taboo subject. The stigma attached to mental illness prevents many women from seeking help, fearing judgment or ostracism. Moreover, the lack of accessible mental health mental health professional’s services including counselling and psychiatric care, which can prevent individuals from getting the help they need exacerbates the problem. There are few, and those that exist are often concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural women with even fewer options for support. This lack of awareness and resources can lead women to feel trapped and hopeless, with suicide seeming like the only escape.I have requested valley’s noted mental health specialist prof Mushtaq Margoob sahib for raising more awareness to shed more light on this sensitive subject - Economic and Educational Challenges:
Economic instability and limited educational opportunities are also critical factors. Many women in Kashmir face economic hardships, particularly if they are widowed, divorced, or single mothers. The lack of financial independence can make them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Additionally, limited access to education restricts their opportunities for personal and professional growth, trapping them in cycles of poverty and dependence. The frustration and despair that arise from these circumstances can push some women toward suicide as a perceived way out. - Domestic Violence and Abuse:
Issues like domestic violence, abuse, marital discord and familial conflicts is another pervasive issue in Kashmir, often hidden behind closed doors. Women who experience physical, emotional, or psychological abuse may feel powerless to escape due to societal expectations to maintain family unity and the fear of social stigma. The legal and social systems often fail to provide adequate protection or support, leaving victims with few alternatives. In such situations, some women may see suicide as the only way to end their suffering.
that can lead to a sense of entrapment and helplessness can also drive individuals to consider suicide as a means of escape from their situation. - Societal Changes and Modernization
Kashmir is undergoing rapid social changes, influenced by globalization, technology, and exposure to different cultures. While these changes bring opportunities, they also create tensions between traditional values and modern lifestyles. The younger generation, including women, may aspire to more autonomy and freedom than previous generations. However, the clash between these aspirations and the traditional expectations placed upon them can create a sense of confusion and conflict. For some, this internal struggle may become unbearable, leading to tragic outcomes. Patriarchal norms and gender discrimination can limit opportunities and autonomy for women, contributing to frustration and despair compounded by the societal stigma attached to right to divorce or separation can exacerbate the situation for women facing marital problems. - Lack of Community Support
Traditionally, Kashmiri society has been known for its close-knit communities such as extended family and strong social bonds. However, in recent years, there seems to be a weakening of these support systems. Urbanization, migration, and changing lifestyles have led to a breakdown of extended family structures and community networks. As a result, women who are struggling may find themselves isolated and without the support they need. The absence of a strong support system can exacerbate feelings of loneliness and despair, making it harder for women to find solace or assistance and without a place to turn.
Where Society Has Failed? In some cases, societal judgment and lack of empathy may deter individuals from seeking help. Despite these complex and interrelated factors, the society and institutions in Kashmir have largely failed to implement effective preventative measures. There is a lack of targeted interventions to address the specific needs and vulnerabilities of women. For instance, while fencing vulnerable bridges a long pending demand of sensitive souls like me could be a practical step to prevent impulsive suicides, it addresses only the symptom and not the root causes. There is a need for comprehensive mental health services, including counselling and support groups, accessible to all women. Educational programs that raise awareness about mental health and domestic violence could also play a crucial role in prevention.
Ignoring Mental Health:
There has been a failure to recognize and prioritize mental health issues. The lack of mental health education, awareness, and accessible services contributes to untreated conditions.
Reinforcing Patriarchal Norms:
Society often reinforces patriarchal norms that restrict women’s roles and opportunities, creating a hostile environment for those who do not conform.
Lack of Legal and Institutional Support:Inadequate legal protection and support for victims of domestic violence, harassment, and discrimination can leave women vulnerable.
Failure to Provide Economic Opportunities:The lack of economic empowerment initiatives for women has contributed to financial dependence and insecurity.

Addressing the increase in suicides among females in Kashmir requires a comprehensive and multifaceted approach. By recognizing the root causes and societal failures, and taking proactive steps to address them, society can work towards creating a more supportive and empathetic environment where individuals feel valued and supported. While fencing bridges by authorities is welcome step((“deer ayeey durust ayeey”- probably proactively done earlier might have prevented a few to take this course ) might prevent some impulsive attempts, it does not address the underlying causes of suicidal tendencies. A comprehensive approach that includes mental health support, social empowerment, community engagement, and strong legal measures is essential to tackle this issue effectively. The goal should be to create a society where individuals feel valued, supported, and have access to the resources they need to lead fulfilling lives. Moreover, societal attitudes need to shift to reduce the stigma associated with seeking help for mental health issues. Encouraging open discussions about mental health, providing safe spaces for women to express their struggles, and promoting gender equality are essential steps. The role of religious and community leaders is also crucial in fostering a compassionate and supportive environment.
