Online gambling, a rapidly growing menace, is emerging as a serious challenge to the region’s financial stability, agricultural economy, and demographic balance. With limited resources and a closed ecosystem, Kashmir is particularly vulnerable to the cascading effects of this digital vice. The implications are dire: a potential economic crisis, loss of land and assets, and a shift in the region’s demographic structure. In recent years, online gambling has gained traction in Jammu and Kashmir, fueled by the widespread availability of smartphones and internet connectivity. According to a 2023 report by Greater Kashmir, the region has witnessed a 300% increase in online gambling activities since 2020. Platforms offering casino games, sports betting, and virtual poker have become easily accessible, targeting young adults and even teenagers. The anonymity and convenience of these platforms have made them particularly appealing, leading to a surge in addiction cases. The Jammu and Kashmir Police have reported a significant rise in cybercrime related to online gambling. In 2022 alone, over 500 cases were registered, with losses amounting to approximately ₹50 crore. However, these figures only represent reported cases; the actual numbers are believed to be much higher. The lack of stringent regulations and enforcement mechanisms has allowed this industry to flourish unchecked.
Financial Drain and Economic Vulnerability
Jammu and Kashmir’s economy is predominantly agrarian, with agriculture contributing nearly 27% to the state’s GDP, as per the Economic Survey of Jammu and Kashmir 2022-23.
