Srinagar, Apr 6 : Over 400 saplings were planted at Amar Singh College here on Monday as part of the Union Territory-wide Mega Plantation Drive launched by Higher Education Minister Ms Sakeena Itoo.
In a statement issued to news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) the college said that the drive commenced at 12 noon at the college’s historic Heritage Building. Prof Aijaz Ahmad Hakak, Principal of the college, addressed the gathering and highlighted the ecological and ethical significance of plantation drives in the present era of environmental crisis.
“There is an urgent need for collective responsibility and institutional participation in preserving ecological balance,” Prof Hakak said.
Prof Nusrat Syed, Convenor of the Landscape Committee, motivated students to become active custodians of the environment and stressed the importance of sustained care and monitoring of the planted saplings.
The plantation was carried out across different departments under the supervision of respective Heads of Departments.
NSS Programme Officers of Units I, II and III, along with members of the ECO Club and Shehjar Club, coordinated the efforts.
Ram Niwas (IAS), Commissioner Secretary, Higher Education Department, actively participated in the drive and planted saplings. He was joined by Shafqat Iqbal, Special Secretary, HED, Prof Sheikh Ajaz Bashir, Director Colleges, J&K, and Naseer Ahmad Wani (JKAS), Director School Education, Kashmir.
The dignitaries lauded the efforts of Amar Singh College under the leadership of Prof Aijaz Ahmad Hakak for aligning with the broader UT-level vision spearheaded by the minister for a greener and sustainable future.
More than 300 faculty members, non-teaching staff and student volunteers participated in the event. The programme concluded with a collective pledge to nurture and protect the planted saplings the statement further reads. (KNS)
