Srinagar, Jul 28: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday passed a resolution on its 27th Foundation Day, reaffirming its commitment to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional status and announcing peaceful protests across the Union Territory on August 5.
The resolution, adopted on the occasion of the party’s foundation day, reiterated the PDP’s commitment to the vision of its founder, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, and his principles of “Peace with Dignity,” dialogue, reconciliation and inclusive governance.
The party resolved to continue its constitutional and democratic struggle for the restoration of Article 370, Article 35A and the constitutional guarantees that safeguarded Jammu and Kashmir’s unique identity and autonomy. It also called for the immediate release of political prisoners and detainees, an end to the misuse of preventive detention laws, and the protection of the democratic rights and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The PDP announced that it would organise peaceful district-level and Union Territory-wide protests on August 5 to reiterate its demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional position and to defend democratic and federal principles.
Among its other demands, the party sought the reopening of cross-Line of Control (LoC) trade and travel routes, the gradual withdrawal of security forces from civilian areas where militancy has significantly declined, and the creation of separate divisional administrative units for the Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley regions. It also demanded that Jammu and Kashmir receive a fair share of its natural resources, including the transfer of at least two major hydroelectric power projects or adequate compensation.
The resolution further called for a transparent, merit-based and time-bound recruitment drive to fill over one lakh government vacancies, welcomed greater political representation for women, and pledged to work for the safe and dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits and other displaced communities. It also expressed solidarity with civilians affected by the conflict in Iran and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to peaceful and democratic means in pursuing its political objectives.
