The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, paid tribute to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on the occasion of National Sports Day 2020.
On the occasion of National Sports Day 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to one of the country’s biggest sporting icons, Major Dhyan Chand, lauding his skills with the hockey stick that won India several accolades at the international level.
PM Modi took to Twitter to post a series of tweets not only lauding Dhyan Chand but also highlighting the importance of making sports an active part of one’s day-to-day life. He also expressed the need to honour the ‘exemplary sportspersons’ who glorify the country’s name on the international circuit.

On the occasion, an annual award ceremony is also held where the President of India honours top sporting athletes and coaches with the Khel Ratna, Arjuna, Dhyan Chand and Dronachary awards. With this being a COVID-19 affected year, President Ram Nath Kovind will hold a virtual award ceremony where the likes of Rohit Sharma, Manika Batra, Sandeep Chaudhary, Ishant Sharma among 65 athletes will be honoured.
The awardees will be in attendance from various cities in the country including Bengaluru, Pune, Sonepat, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Lucknow, Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal, Hyderabad and Itanagar. The ceremony will begin at 11:00 AM IST. ( News Now )
