News Delhi, March 3: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday highlighted a strongly worded column by Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, criticising the Union Government’s silence over the reported killing of Iran’s sitting head of state during ongoing diplomatic negotiations.
Sharing excerpts from the article on X, Priyanka Gandhi underlined what she termed the moral and diplomatic implications of India’s restrained response to the incident.
In the column, titled “Government’s silence on killing of Iran leader is not neutral, it is abdication,” Sonia Gandhi described the assassination of a sitting head of state amid active negotiations as a “grave rupture” in contemporary international relations. She argued that beyond the shock of the event itself, New Delhi’s silence stood out as deeply concerning.
According to her, silence in such circumstances cannot be interpreted as strategic neutrality, but risks being seen as a moral abdication. She maintained that an act of this magnitude carries serious consequences for global diplomacy and international law.
The Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson further contended that India’s long-standing commitment to non-alignment, dialogue, and respect for sovereignty obliges it to articulate a clear and principled position when core international norms are challenged.
Invoking India’s historical role in advocating peaceful coexistence and multilateralism, Sonia Gandhi asserted that the country has traditionally not remained a mute spectator when international law and sovereign integrity are undermined. She suggested that continued silence could weaken India’s moral authority on the global stage.
By drawing attention to the column, Priyanka Gandhi signalled the Congress party’s broader concerns over what it views as an erosion of India’s independent foreign policy posture.
The remarks are likely to intensify political debate over the government’s handling of foreign affairs, particularly in West Asia, a region where India holds substantial strategic and economic interests.
At the time of reporting, the government had not issued a detailed response to the criticism. However, the Congress leadership’s intervention has renewed focus on India’s diplomatic stance amid escalating global tensions.
