Reservation, before moving to the main issue or the main topic i.e. what’s wrong with the reservation? The readers should know what actually reservation is, because it’s the main part of an Indian society. As the name gives the clear idea what would it be or what it is? So Reservation is basically in a layman language is giving some privileges or reserving some facilities for some people of the society against masses. In India Reservation is done on caste basis, as we all know India is known for itsdiversity, whether it’s culture, traditions, customs, religionetc., India is diverse in nature so it’s the same scenario with the caste system, The Indian society is divided among various castes. There were castes which enjoyed various privileges in the society and they were categorized as upper caste in history and they were castes which didn’t enjoyed privileges such as attending public function, entering temples etc. They were known as Shudras or Harijans later on.
To protect them Reservation system finds its origin soon after the independence .These under privileged class now popularly known as Scheduled castes or Scheduled tribes and Other backward classes .It was done to make them a part of Indian mainstream society and to eliminate discrimination.. DR. Ambedkar demanded reservation during framing of the Constitution Of India for 10 years until equality is enforced but it continues till now.
The Reservation system get its legal backing in Indian Constitution in various articles line in PART III which contains fundamental rights, In article 15(4) it is stated that “Nothing in this article or in clause (2) of article 29 shall prevent the state from making any special provisions for the advancement of any socially or educationally backward classes of citizens or for the SC’s and ST’s. In article 16 there is a mention of making provision for reservation of seats regarding promotion to any class. PART XVI, Article 330 reserves seats for SC’s and ST’s in the house of people (Lok Sabha), Article 332 reserves seats for them in Legislatives Assemblies of the states and there are more articles related to their reservations.
Now the question arises why the masses hates them or disfavors the reservation system or what is wrong with it? The answer what I feel is that there is nothing wrong in the reservation system .To bring equality in a society it’s a good way, all citizens of the country have a right to equality as prescribed in Indian constitution .What the problem is the way of implementation is wrong .The implementation of Reservation system will not at all help Indian economy to prosper, because they may uplift the unprivileged people of the society but they will do so at the sake of making privileged class suffer. The implementation of government is such that it is giving reservation to all people under SC’s or ST’s instead of those who are in need which in turn instead of accepting them in a society caters a feeling of hatred and disliking. For example if a government is helping the needy in this caste, instead of giving reservations to officers, will it actually serve the purpose of reservation system? All these reasons inculcated the feeling of hatred and divided the upper and lower caste people and still lower caste are not able to get recognition in the society. The privileged section of society thinks that despite their efforts they are not able to achieve success due to reservation system. The recent case is a good example of it, the recent death of 29 year old M.Phil.StudentJ.Muthukrishnan, committed suicide of JNU student has again brought to light the glaring divide the system of reservations brings to education system. The biases and the possibility of prejudice meted out to be students from backward classes instead of diminishing it.. There are every year number of suicides by students due to reservation system, The politicians are also responsible for the reservation system .Every time during elections they talk about casteism ,the facilities or benefits they give to particular caste is increasing riots in our country on daily basis. The other people are demanding reservation or removal of reservation system. In 2016 the JAT’S community demanded reservation for them in order to do so they conducted various riots.
CONCLUSION
The reservation system is so deeply planted that eradication or removal is not possible but what the government can change is only implementation which they should do so, Because removing reservation system will result in riots or war like situation as people are so addicted to it that they are not ready to give it.What the need of an hour is to change the implementation so it will benefit the society in a good way .Another judgment like Indra Sawhney v Union of India should be given.
