The state of Jammu and Kashmir was the princely state under the British colonial rule. After the Indian independence Act 1947, the state become virtually independent country though for the time being as the ruler of the state had not decided yet about the future of the state weather accession with India, Pakistan or remains independent. After the partition the situation became so horrible and the unfolding political events led to the accession of the state of Jammu and Kashmir to India. The accession was limited, conditional and temporary. Since the state due to its peculiar political, demographic and geographical conditions did not completely merge with India as did the other princely states. The Prime Minister of India had promised to the people of the state the right to self-determination but the promises were broken which gave rise to many serious issues. Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru further stated that, ‘People seem to forget that Kashmir is not a commodity for sale or to be bartered. It has an individual existence and its people must be the final arbiters of their future”. In the last days of 1948 a ceasefire was agreed under UN auspices, and the plebiscite was promised by UN which was never conducted. Relations between India and Pakistan worsened day by day and eventually led to several wars over Kashmir in 1965 and 1999. Kashmir conflict is the longest pending issue in the UN. Every day people in the Kashmir are beaten, blinded and killed. Life in Kashmir is punctuated by tragedies. Bullets and pellets are used against the innocent people of Kashmir to silent the dissent and suppress the voice of voiceless people. The people of Kashmir are suffering immensely under Indian occupation. Kashmir dispute considered by the United Nations Security Council in its earliest resolution and those adopted subsequently as a threat and danger to the preservation and maintenance of international peace and security.
Kashmir is the highest militarized zone of the world. Kashmir is a caged paradise, much of innocent blood having been split on the streets of the valley. Presently the situation has worsened and Indian troops are employing every possible inhuman trick to dominate and oppress the people of valley. Our politicians are hypocrites, notorious; they betrayed the innocent Kashmiri people from time to time. Nobody can deny the fact that Kashmiri people want freedom from occupation, from fear, from unemployment, from corruption and from many more issues. Mummar Gaddafi in his historic speech at UN General Assembly said; ‘’Kashmir should be an independent state not Pakistan not India. We should end this conflict.’’Politicans of valley behave as communal in Kashmir, secular in Jammu and nationalist in Delhi. Both Indian and state politicians failed to win the hearts of people because of their deceitful and inhuman treatment.
Kashmir issue is most dangerous issue and that day is not far away when it would engulf the whole subcontinent. GOI has never been serious and good towards the people of Kashmir. Nobel laureate A.Sen rightly said,’’Kashmir brutality is the biggest blot on the democracy of India.’’ Both India and Pakistan should shun their political ego and start a peaceful dialogue process as there is no other mechanism which can prove fruitful and inclusive. No peace is possible without solving it. It needs a sincere approach from all stakeholders. New Delhi should recognize that Kashmir is not a law and order problem but political issue.
