Srinagar, Nov 22 : Inspector General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), P. K. Sharma on Saturday said that all necessary security arrangements have been put in place to ensure peace and a conducive environment in Srinagar as the Third CRPF Cricket Tournament kicked off in the city.

Speaking to reporters, IG Sharma, as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, said the annual tournament has been organised each year since 2023 with the objective of engaging local youth and promoting a healthy sports culture.

“This year, nearly 123 teams from Srinagar, Baramulla and Ganderbal showed willingness to participate. However, due to time limitations, a draw was conducted and sixteen teams were finalised,” he said.

The tournament is being held in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, while the University of Kashmir has provided the playing venues.

Sharma said the CRPF has focused on ensuring greater youth involvement. “We introduced age-specific categories to encourage participation from U-19 and U-23 players. Kashmir has immense potential in cricket, and through such events, we aim to nurture talent and foster peace and social harmony,” he added.

On the security situation in Srinagar, the IG said the CRPF, J&K Police, Army and civil administration continue to work in close coordination. “Since this is a sports event, I won’t go into extensive details, but I can say that every required measure has been taken from our side,” he said.

He further noted that the CRPF has been operating in Kashmir for over three decades, and public cooperation with the force has consistently strengthened. —(KNC)
