In the serene town of Handwara in north Kashmir, a remarkable woman named Bilkees Ara has emerged as a symbol of humanity and compassion. Over the years, Bilkees has donated blood 38 times, becoming a lifesaver for countless individuals in critical need.
A Journey of Selfless Giving
Bilkees Ara’s journey began over a decade ago when she first learned about the acute need for blood donors in her community. Motivated by the idea that a single unit of blood could save up to three lives, she decided to take the step that would later become her life’s mission. Her first donation was for an accident victim in desperate need of blood, and since then, she has never looked back.
She has consistently donated blood at various hospitals and blood donation camps, often traveling long distances to ensure her contribution reaches those who need it most. Her remarkable commitment has made her a familiar face among the medical fraternity in north Kashmir.
A Lifesaver for All
Bilkees has donated blood not just for emergencies but also for individuals suffering from chronic illnesses like thalassemia and cancer, who require regular transfusions. Her O-negative blood type, which is often in high demand due to its universal compatibility, has saved lives in some of the most critical cases.
“Whether it’s a child battling a disease or someone injured in an accident, knowing that my blood could make a difference gives me immense satisfaction,” Bilkees shared with a warm smile.
Inspiration to the Community
Beyond her role as a donor, Bilkees actively campaigns for blood donation in her community. She conducts awareness programs, visits schools and colleges, and engages with local youth to break the myths and fears surrounding blood donation. Her efforts have inspired many young men and women to step forward and join this noble cause.
“People are often hesitant to donate, fearing it might weaken them. I want to dispel these misconceptions and show that donating blood is safe and necessary. It’s a way to contribute to humanity,” she says passionately.
Challenges Along the Way
Despite her extraordinary efforts, Bilkees Ara has faced her share of challenges. As a woman in a conservative society, her frequent visits to hospitals and blood camps initially raised eyebrows. However, her determination and the visible impact of her work gradually won her the community’s respect and admiration.
“Initially, people would question why I was so active in this work, but when they saw the lives being saved, their perspective changed,” she recalls.
Recognition and Awards
Bilkees Ara’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. She has received multiple accolades from local health departments, NGOs, and civil society organizations for her invaluable contributions. However, for her, the real reward is the gratitude she receives from families whose loved ones have been saved.
A Message to All
As the winter season grips Kashmir, when blood shortages become a grave concern due to reduced donor turnout, Bilkees urges everyone to take up the mantle. “Blood is the most precious gift you can give. It costs nothing but means everything to someone in need. I appeal to everyone to donate and make a difference,” she says.
A True Hero
Bilkees Ara’s story is not just one of giving but of courage, resilience, and unwavering dedication to a cause larger than herself. Her journey serves as a reminder that heroes walk among us, often unnoticed, but their acts of kindness ripple through lives, leaving a lasting impact.
Bilkees Ara’s selfless contributions have made her a role model for many, proving that one person’s determination can indeed change the world, one drop at a time.
