Seminar on Substance Abuse – Our CollectiveResponsibility & Mental Health at the Workplace Heldat Government Polytechnic College Budgam

Nagam, 28 October 2024: A thought-provoking seminar on “Substance Abuse – Our
Collective Responsibility & Mental Health at the Workplace” was held today at Government
Polytechnic College Budgam in collaboration with the Kashmir American Society of
Healthcare, Medical Education & Research (KASHMER). This impactful event aimed to
raise awareness about substance abuse prevention and foster mental health support in
professional environments. The seminar was graced by Chief Guest Dr. Nasir Shah,
currently serving as the Additional Director in the Department of Science and
Technology, Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Nasir underscored the need for collective action to
combat substance abuse and stressed the essential role that educational institutions play
in nurturing healthier, safer communities.The event featured engaging presentations by
prominent experts, who covered various aspects of mental health and substance abuse:
 Dr. Muhammad Muzaffar Khan, Consultant Psychologist, addressed the urgent
need for collective responsibility in combating substance abuse.
 Dr. Syed Riyaz Ahmad, Project Head at KASHMER, provided an overview of
KASHMER’s projects and its contributions to healthcare and community welfare.
 Ms. Arifat Rashid, Counseling Psychologist with KASHMER, conducted an
insightful session on mental health awareness, emphasizing the importance of
accessible mental health resources and support networks.
 Ms. Arbeena Iqbal, Counseling Psychologist with KASHMER, delivered a
comprehensive talk on substance abuse, highlighting its impacts on individuals
and families, and discussing prevention strategies.
The seminar was also enriched by cultural performances, including a group song, solo
performances, and a traditional Kashmiri song, which added a vibrant and cultural touch
to the event. Dr. Shafaquat Ara, Principal of Government Polytechnic College Budgam,
delivered the concluding remarks, extending heartfelt appreciation to KASHMER, the
distinguished speakers, and all attendees. She acknowledged the dedication of the
organizing faculty members and expressed gratitude to the esteemed guests for their
invaluable contributions. Dr. Ara also presented certificates to the participants and
distributed academic excellence awards to the toppers of the MJ24 session, honoring their
achievements in the presence of the Chief Guest. In addition, a well-curated lunch was
served to the audience, ensuring a warm and hospitable experience for all. This seminar
served as a vital platform to equip students, faculty, and staff with the knowledge and
resources necessary to support mental health initiatives and address substance abuse
within their communities.
