Born in 1987 in the serene village of Achhabal in Anantnag district, south Kashmir, Shazia Bashir’s story is one of talent, determination, and cultural pride. From an early age, Shazia exhibited a deep love for music, often imitating songs she heard during her school days. Despite her inherent shyness and a fear of singing in public, her natural talent was undeniable. Those who heard her sing could see that she was destined for greatness. Little did she know, her journey would take her from the remote corners of Kashmir to stages around the world, making her one of the region’s most beloved vocalists after the legendary singers like Raj Begum ,Naseem Akhtar,Asha Koul ,Shamima Dev ,Kailash Mehra ,Arti Ticku,Neerja Munshi and many others .
Growing up, Shazia was known for her shy demeanor, which made her hesitant to sing openly. Despite her reticence, her enchanting voice did not go unnoticed in her village. Her big break arrived when she was in the ninth grade. She began her journey into the world of music by lending her voice to a serial, marking her first encounter with professional music and the microphone. Her performance garnered widespread acclaim, quickly establishing her as a local favorite.
Following her initial success, Shazia was approached by a local recording studio at Anantnag to record a cassette. This opportunity signaled the true beginning of her professional music career. Her recordings were met with enthusiasm and praise, propelling her to recognition beyond the confines of her village. Thus, Shazia’s once quiet, hesitant voice began to resonate far and wide, heralding the rise of a new star.
Initially, Shazia grappled with apprehensions, her enthusiasm dampened by the fear of her parents’ disapproval. Yet, recognition did not take long to find her. The same father she had feared soon became her staunchest supporter, procuring the competition’s entry form for “Milay Sur,” and encouraging her to step into the limelight. As Shazia began to perform, any lingering doubts evaporated. Her captivating performances not only won over the audience but also led her to emerge as the winner of the show.
In 2007, Shazia’s life took a remarkable turn when she decided to audition for “Milay Sur,” a popular singing competition aired on DD Kashir, the Kashmiri channel of Doordarshan. The show was groundbreaking in the region, a beacon for young, energetic artists eager to showcase their talent. Shazia’s audition was a pivotal moment, her voice cutting through the din of hopefuls to capture the judges’ attention. Against the odds, she was selected as a contestant. Notably, she was the only female participant, a fact that compounded the challenges she faced.
Shazia’s triumph on “Milay Sur” ignited a fervent desire to delve deeper into the realm of music. She sought guidance from luminaries like Pandit Kishen Langoo and Pandit T.K. Jalali, albeit briefly. Though her formal training was limited, Shazia possessed an innate musical sensibility and a voice that resonated with the depth of natural talent. Through recordings and self-study, she mastered the intricacies of different octaves and the nuances of sur and taal.
However, success never comes without struggle. Shazia’s journey was no exception. She remembers the grueling days when she would shuttle down from Anantnag to Srinagar, performing at various platforms for a meager fee of five hundred rupees. Out of this, she would pay for bus fare and other expenses, often saving next to nothing. After each performance, she would hastily catch a bus back home, where her father would wait anxiously to receive her every evening.Her father always bore the expenses of her travels when she was struggling .These were the most trying times for Shazia, as she had no acquaintances in the city where she could stay. The relentless travel back and forth, the physical exhaustion, and the meager earnings painted a picture of relentless struggle. Each night, as she returned home, the fatigue of the day weighed heavily on her, yet her determination remained unshaken.
As time passed, her fee was revised, allowing her to save a modest amount. This gradual improvement brought a glimmer of hope. Eventually, she managed to save enough to rent a small room in Srinagar, providing her with a semblance of respite. No longer did she have to endure the exhausting commute after each performance. This newfound stability allowed her to focus more on her craft, slowly but steadily paving the way for her future successes.
Her accomplishments are all the more commendable given her scant background in Hindustani classical music. Through determination and the unique timbre of her voice, Shazia transcended these limitations, eventually earning the distinction of becoming an A-grade artist approved by All India Radio. Remarkably, her approval came without the usual audition process. A duet recorded with a prominent Kashmiri singer caught the attention of a Radio Kashmir producer, who, upon discovering that Shazia had not yet been formally approved, promptly invited her to the station. She filled out the necessary forms and was instantly granted B-grade status. Not long after, her talents saw her rise to the coveted A-grade.
Shazia’s voice is a soulful instrument, rich and melodious, with a texture that lingers in the hearts of listeners. Her singing style is imbued with deep emotion, a reflection of her inner world. The soulful quality of her voice conveys a profound sense of longing and beauty, effortlessly traversing the complexities of classical compositions while maintaining a connection to the listener’s soul. Her renditions are marked by an exquisite balance of technical precision and heartfelt expression, making each performance a unique and moving experience.

She also sang kirtans, bhajans, and leelas for the Pandit families living in Jammu camps, demonstrating her ability to connect with diverse audiences. Her songs, such as “Mastoor Tamlavith Kastoor Lagaw,” composed by the noted singer and composer Munir Ahmad Mir, became popular across the valley. Through her music, Shazia breathed life into the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir, becoming a cultural ambassador for the region.
Shazia’s talent and hard work did not go unnoticed outside Kashmir. Her performances took her to various states across India and even to international venues. One of the highlights of her career was performing in London, where she participated in a concert that was warmly received by the expatriate community. Reflecting on her experience, Shazia recalled, “I was in London to participate in a concert. It was simply wonderful. The expatriate community applauded heartily to all my performances.”
Her international performances helped her gain a global fan base and brought attention to Kashmiri music on the world stage. Shazia’s ability to transcend cultural and geographical boundaries through her music underscored her role as a cultural ambassador for Kashmir.
Over the years, Shazia Bashir has garnered numerous awards and accolades for her significant contributions to music. Among her many achievements, she was nominated for the prestigious Bismillah Khan Award by the Sangeet Natak Academy, an honor bestowed by the President of India in Delhi. This recognition stands as a testament to her exceptional talent and unwavering dedication to the art of music.
In addition to the Bismillah Khan Award, Shazia Bashir has been honored with several other notable awards. She received the “Infotel” award and multiple recognitions from both government and private agencies, further affirming her status as one of the leading vocalists in the region. Noteworthy among her accolades are the Bakshi Memorial Committee Award in 2014, the Sarhad & Arihant Education Foundation Award in 2009 ay Pune, and the Sa Ma Pa Alap Festival Award. She was also the recipient of the Shashrang Naseem Akhtar Memorial Award in 2012, the RDP Award of Excellence, and an Award of Excellence from J&K Bank. She was also felicitated by Kashmir Tourism , Radio Sharda and many other institutions in lieu of her contributions as a singer . These honors collectively celebrate her extraordinary contributions and enduring influence in the world of music.
Despite her many achievements, Shazia Bashir remains grounded and deeply connected to her roots. She attributes her success to her early struggles and the support she received from her family and community.
