Suspicious death in police academy; no one punished; when will IPS Manumukt ‘Manav’ get justice?
Manumukt’s father, senior litterateur and educationist Dr. Ramniwas ‘Manav’ tells with a heavy heart that despite documentary evidence of criminal negligence of the officers and involvement of his batchmate officers in the conspiracy of Manumukt’s death, no action was taken against them; rather, Telangana Police and CBI hushed up the matter by calling it a normal incident. The entire effort of Telangana Police and CBI was to save the culprits, not to punish the culprits. Not only this, all the governments washed their hands off the matter by calling Manumukt a trainee; no one provided even a rupee of financial assistance to the family.

What a sad law of destiny that exceptional talents get a very short life here. From Adi Shankaracharya to Swami Vivekananda, Swami Ramatirtha, Srinivas Ramanujan, Bharatendu Harishchandra, and Rangeya Raghav, there is a long list of such great men who left this world at a young age after spreading their brilliance. Young Indian Police Service officer Manumukt ‘Manav’ was also one such sparkling talent who was taken by time prematurely. On August 28, 2014, a multi-talented, extremely promising, and influential police officer, Manumukt, died at the young age of 30 years and 9 months, under suspicious circumstances, by drowning in the swimming pool of the National Police Academy, Hyderabad (Telangana).
After the farewell party going on in the Officers Club located near the swimming pool, when Manumukt’s body was found in the swimming pool at midnight, there was a stir not only in the academy but in the whole country, because this was the first such big accident in the 66-year history of the academy. It is also necessary to mention here that even after such a heartbreaking and unfortunate tragedy, neither was the matter investigated properly nor was any officer or employee held responsible and punitive action taken against him. Manumukt’s father, senior litterateur and educationist Dr. Ramniwas ‘Manav’ tells with a heavy heart that despite the documentary evidence of criminal negligence of the officers and the involvement of his batchmate officers in the conspiracy of Manumukt’s death, no action was taken against them; rather, the Telangana Police and the CBI hushed up the matter by calling it a normal incident. The entire effort of the Telangana Police and the CBI was to save the culprits, not to punish the culprits. Not only this, all the governments washed their hands off the matter by saying that Manumukt was a trainee; no one provided even a rupee of financial help to the family. 70-year-old Dr. ‘Manav’, who has been continuously fighting for the last decade to get his son’s murderers punished, says in despair that now he has neither faith in the natural justice system nor in the Indian justice system.
It is noteworthy that Manumukt was a very intelligent and energetic police officer of the 2012 batch and Himachal Pradesh cadre. Born on 23 November 1983 in Hisar (Haryana) and having received higher education from Punjab University, Chandigarh, Manumukt had achieved all the highest achievements of NCC, including the ‘C’ certificate. Apart from being a very good thinker, he was also a versatile artist and successful photographer; he was a master of selfies. He also had a great interest in social service. He wanted to establish a health center in his native village and a civil service academy in Narnaul in the memory of his grandparents. He had many more dreams for the country and society, which were shattered with his untimely death.
The death of the only young IPS son was no less than a terrible thunderbolt for Manumukt’s father, senior litterateur and educationist Dr. Ramniwas ‘Manav,’ and mother, former professor of economics Dr. Kanta Bharti. If it had been any other couple, they would have been shattered, but the ‘Manav’ couple, showing amazing patience and courage, not only endured this unimaginable, unbearable pain but also started making every effort to preserve and keep alive the memories of their son. They invested their entire savings and formed the Manumukt ‘Manav’ Memorial Trust on October 10, 2014, and built ‘Manumukt Bhawan’ in Narnaul and established an air-conditioned small auditorium, museum, and library in it. The trust started one international award of two and a half lakhs, one national award of one lakh, two national-international awards of 21 thousand each, three national-international awards of 11 thousand each, and 100 Manumukt ‘Manav’ Smriti Samman.
Manumukt ‘Manav’ was not only a symbol of youth power but also a source of inspiration. Even a decade after his death, he is remembered with great respect. The family has kept his inspiring memories alive through media, social media, and Facebook. For this, Manumukt’s elder sister and senior economist of the World Bank, Washington, DC (USA), Dr. S. Anukriti, also provides full support. Finally, in the words of Manumukt’s batchmate, Indian Administrative Service officer and currently District Magistrate of Dhamtari (Chhattisgarh), Namrata Gandhi, it can be said, “Manumukt was an elder brother, friend, philosopher, and guide for us. His personality was full of great humor, while his heart was also made of pure gold. There was a great depth in his inner self, which was difficult to guess from the outside. He was a brilliant administrator, a natural leader, an excellent team player, a respected senior, a trusted junior, and everyone’s favorite friend and colleague. It is not possible for any of us to forget him.”
