The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has outlined an ambitious plan to achieve energy independence for India by 2047, aiming to make the country a developed nation. Here are the key points from the BJP’s Lok Sabha manifesto regarding energy independence:
- Reducing Petroleum Imports: The BJP aims to reduce India’s dependence on imported petroleum through various measures such as promoting electric mobility, establishing a network of charging stations, increasing renewable energy production, and improving energy efficiency.
- Promoting Electric Vehicles and Solar Energy: The party plans to enable homes across India to run devices using electric power, including electric stoves, fans, air conditioners, and televisions. Additionally, the BJP aims to facilitate electric vehicle charging through solar energy.
- Rooftop Solar Scheme: The government has launched the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a rooftop solar scheme with an investment of over Rs 75,000 crores. This initiative aims to provide free electricity to 1 crore households by installing rooftop solar panels.
- Increasing Ethanol Blending and Non-fossil Fuel Sources: The BJP intends to increase ethanol blending in petrol to mitigate environmental degradation and provide additional income to farmers. The party also plans to expand nuclear energy and develop battery energy storage system infrastructure to foster renewable energy integration and grid stability.
- Net Zero Emissions by 2070: The BJP commits to achieving net zero emissions by 2070 and aims to increase the share of non-fossil fuel sources in electricity generation in line with the “Panchamrit” pledge made at COP26. This pledge includes reaching 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, generating half of all energy requirements from renewables, and reducing emissions intensity of GDP by 45 per cent by 2030.
- National Green Hydrogen Mission: The BJP has launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crores up to the financial year 2029-30. This mission aims to lead to the decarbonization of industrial, transport, and energy sectors and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels by investing in expanding green hydrogen production.
Overall, the BJP’s manifesto highlights a comprehensive strategy to achieve energy independence for India through a mix of renewable energy promotion, energy efficiency measures, and technological innovation, with a focus on sustainability and reducing environmental impact.
