The Iron Administrator: Remembering Ghulam Mohammad Shah

Did you know that the man who served as the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir and was known for his strict administrative grip was a law graduate from Aligarh Muslim University?

The Aligarh Connection

Ghulam Mohammad Shah, affectionately known as “Gul Shah,” sharpened his legal acumen at AMU.

* Education: He pursued his Law degree at Aligarh Muslim University, where he developed the political and legal insights that would later define his career in Kashmir politics.

* Global Exposure: He later earned a fellowship from the London School of Economics, adding a global perspective to his local roots.

The Administrator

* Chief Minister (1984–1986): As the CM, he was known as a taskmaster who focused on infrastructure and governance.

* Legacy of Development: His tenure saw the completion of critical projects like the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Soura and the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board formation, which streamlined the pilgrimage management.

G.M. Shah was a complex figure in Kashmir’s history—a man of strong will and action. His time at Aligarh contributed to the legal and administrative toughness he was known for.
