If we look at our ancestral system of education which is still prevalent in Islamia High school Rajouri kadal sgr, which was taught as a one Unit, academics was a part, thrust was on tarbeeyat. A pass out then knew proper way to talk respectfully, pray, make ghusul, eat etc. Education was a guide to living rather than earning. This resulted in the institution producing eminent writers, educators, engineers, doctors, politicians and adminstrators. The students of this institution include Sheikh Mohd Abdullah, Mir Qasim, Mufti Syed, Prof Shamussuddin, Prof Rehman Rahi, Munshi Issaq, Hakeem Sadiq, Dr Ali Jan, Dr Habibullah Zargar, Dr Nasrallah, Peer Zada Gh Nabi, Justice Jalaluddin, Justice Bahudin, Zarif ah. Zarif and so many other eminent personalities from different walks of life. The same pattern of education was prevalent in schools run by kashmiri pandits. Educaton policy must focus on morality, skill development and academics with out any discrimination among the have & have not’s, the rich & the poor. Islam lays emphasis on education. First word from Allah to our beloved Prophet saw is “Iqra Iqra” and first Tarbiyat-gah was Gar-e-Hira (cave). If we look at history, after being defeated in a war, two options were available to the prisoner either to be beheaded or to pay fine ,but the Prophet (PBUH) introduced third option for the prisoners “to teach” the Sahabas. The prisioners were not Muslims who could teach Quran or Namaz but impart their knowledge in other aspects. Education is the crying need of Muslims. One can’t cook without fire, one can’t have emancipation without education. In the name of modernity, the emphasis should not be on progressiveness but civility as they’re two sides of the same coin. Today market is the temple which is being worshipped while morality, humility and social bonding lost in passage of time and only visible as mere masks rather than the foundation of growth. Thereby necessitating review of the entire education policy. Education should be multi pronged rather than just to earn bread and butter of life. Even a beggar earns. Education system should lay emphasis on excellence. If we want to produce excellent engineers, doctors, etc we should be ready to spend handsome amount on education. For instance in our schools, the science teacher draws a diagram of heart and labelling the parts (auricles and ventricle) while the expensive schools like tata and birla demonstrate heart models made of plastic with separable parts thereby imparting better understanding of the topic. This shows the compartmentation of education for the rich and the poor. This needs to be eliminated so both can serve the society’s interest equally and with excellence. Uniform syllabus, books and uniform are 1st step in reducing this disparity. The decision taken by the Govt to have uniform ,similar same study material ,books is good step in this direction provided they will also concentrate on infrastructure.
