Srinagar, Sep 25 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday moved a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly calling upon the Government of India for immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Moving the resolution, Omar Abdullah said, as per news agency, “Today I have moved a resolution in the House. This House, in addition to the resolutions passed on 26th June 2000 and 6th November 2024, calls upon the Government of India for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and resolves that this resolution be forwarded to Government of India.”
Addressing the House and later the media, the Chief Minister said the people of J&K were promised a three-step process by the Prime Minister and Home Minister on the floor of Parliament and outside.
“We were promised by the Prime Minister, by the Home Minister, on the floor of Parliament and outside — that Jammu and Kashmir will go through a three-step process. First delimitation, then elections, then statehood will be restored,” Omar said.
He added that the first two steps have been completed.
“Delimitation is done. Elections are done. People of J&K participated in large numbers. Now what remains is statehood. So we are reminding the Government of India of its own promise,” he said.
Clarifying the reference to past resolutions, the CM said, “The 2000 autonomy resolution and the 2024 resolution for special status are part of history of this House. We have not forgotten them. But today our immediate demand is full statehood.”
Omar Abdullah also slammed BJP legislators for disrupting the proceedings and tearing copies of the resolution.
“Unfortunately BJP does not want to hear this. They tore the resolution copies today. This is disrespect to the House. If they have problem with autonomy, they can speak, but to not allow restoration of statehood… people are watching,” he said
