Srinagar, Feb 26 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said tourism remains the “lifeline” of the Union Territory but stressed that the sector must adapt to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth.

Addressing the 21st convocation of the University of Kashmir here, Abdullah said that despite challenges in 2025, the tourism industry has begun to realise its potential and requires diversification beyond traditional hotspots.

He said destinations such as Gulmarg and Pahalgam will continue to play a key role, but the government is focusing on promoting border tourism in areas like Keran, Gurez and Titwal to expand the sector’s footprint.

Abdullah said these villages, once known for conflict, are now emerging as tourist destinations and symbols of connectivity.

He added that the administration, in coordination with the Union government, is working to develop nine new tourist destinations to ensure broader regional benefits.

Emphasising environmental safeguards, the chief minister cautioned against unregulated expansion and pointed to concerns such as receding glaciers and changing winter patterns.

He said the government is investing in sustainable infrastructure, including eco-friendly facilities and artificial snow systems, to protect fragile ecosystems while supporting tourism-dependent livelihoods.

Calling on students, particularly those from environmental sciences, Abdullah urged them to contribute to framing sustainable standards for the hospitality sector to ensure that economic growth does not compromise ecological balance.(KNS)
