Srinagar, Aug 13: Police has arrested two men for allegedly extorting ₹24,000 from a local resident by threatening to frame him in a false narcotics case in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

A police spokesman said that they received a complaint from Ajaz Ahmad Shah, son of Mohd Maqbool and a resident of Pethi Nambal Mattan. In the complaint, Shah alleged that the accused had taken ₹24,000 from him and threatened to implicate him in an NDPS case if he did not pay more.

Upon verifying the allegations, police found the complainant had no involvement in any narcotics case. Subsequently, FIR No. 68/2026 was registered at Srigufwara Police Station under Sections 308(2)(6), 318(4) and 351(2) of BNS, the spokesman added.

During investigation, police identified and arrested the two accused, Muzafar Ahmad Mir, son of Ghulam Mohammad Mir, resident of Veer Nowbugh, Bijbehara, and Jan Mohammad Wagay, son of Ghulam Rasool, resident of Pethi Nambal Mattan.

Police said the swift action reflects its commitment to curb intimidation, extortion and misuse of criminal threats against citizens.
