The Meteorological Department Srinagar on Monday issued a weather advisory, warning of widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir due to two Western Disturbances expected to affect the region later this month.
According to the advisory, an intense Western Disturbance is likely to impact J&K and adjoining areas from January 22 to 24, followed by another moderate system from the night of January 26 to the forenoon of January 28, 2026.
The MeT department said widespread light to moderate rain and snowfall is expected during these periods, with heavy rainfall/snowfall at isolated places, particularly on January 23 and January 27, when peak activity is anticipated.
The advisory said that during January 22–24, heavy rain and snowfall is most likely over the Pir Panjal range, including the Chenab valley of Jammu division and middle and higher reaches of South Kashmir, covering areas such as Anantnag, Pahalgam, Kulgam, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Gulmarg, Sonamarg–Zojila axis, Bandipora–Razdan Pass, Kupwara–Sadhna Pass, Doda, Udhampur, Reasi, Kishtwar and Ramban.
Similarly, the system expected between January 26 and 28, with peak activity on January 27, may cause moderate to heavy rainfall and snowfall over the Pir Panjal range, including the Chenab valley and middle to higher reaches of South Kashmir.
The MeT department warned that the weather activity may lead to disruption of surface and air transport, including the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway and other major roads in higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir.
Travelers, tourists and transporters have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly, while people living in snow-bound areas have been asked to avoid venturing into sloppy and avalanche-prone.
Farmers have been advised to suspend irrigation, fertilizer and chemical spray activities during the affected period. The advisory also cautioned about the remot possibility of landslides, mudslides and gusty winds ranging from 40–60 kmph at vulnerable locations.
The advisory has been issued by the Meteorological Centre, Srinagar, and shared with the divisional administrations for necessary preparedness measures.
