Srinagar, July 9: The Directorate of Physical Education & Sports, University of Kashmir, on Thursday organised the Inter-Collegiate Road Race for Men and Women, with enthusiastic participation from student-athletes representing affiliated colleges across the Valley.
The event celebrated fitness, endurance, sportsmanship and unity while reaffirming the University’s commitment to promoting inclusive sports in line with the objectives of the Khelo Bharat Niti, 2025.
The men’s race was flagged off from the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), while the women’s race commenced from the historic Shalimar Garden. Both races were flagged off by Dr. Surjeet Singh, Coordinator, Directorate of Physical Education & Sports, and concluded at the iconic Rumi Gate.
A major highlight of the event was the impressive participation of women athletes, reflecting the University’s sustained efforts to encourage greater female participation in competitive sports.
In the men’s category, Mohd. Zaffar of Government Degree College, Kokernag secured the first position by completing the race in 40:51.12, followed by Mushtaq Ahmad Birla, also from GDC Kokernag, who finished second in 40:58.16. Aijaz Ahmad Hajam of Government Degree College, Kangan claimed the third position with a timing of 41:34.21.
In the women’s category, Hurmah Shah from the Postgraduate Department, University of Kashmir, emerged victorious with a timing of 31:01.14. Shamsheeda Akhter of Government Degree College, Beerwah finished second in 31:55.25, while Shabnam Akram of Government Degree College, Chrar-e-Sharief secured third place with a timing of 34:25.14.
The medal distribution ceremony was held at the University Athletic Track, where Dr. Surjeet Singh, Dr. Basharat Ali, Dr. Nadeem Ahmad Dar, and Tausif Bhat felicitated the winners with medals and certificates. The proceedings were conducted by Volleyball Coach Muneer Alam.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment by the University of Kashmir to foster a culture of health, excellence and equal opportunities in sports among students.
