Ustad Abdul Rashid Hafiz, a name that resonates through the serene valleys and snow-capped peaks of Kashmir, is not merely a Sufiyana singer; he is the very essence of the region’s soulful melodies, the guardian of its musical heritage amidst the tumultuous winds of change. Born into humble beginnings in late fifties , Hafiz dared to dream beyond the confines of his circumstances, refusing to succumb to the fate of a mere laborer in the bustling streets of Srinagar’s downtown.

In the heart of his youth, when aspirations collided with familial obligations, Hafiz faced the first whispers of dissent from his father, a weaver struggling to make ends meet. Yet, undeterred by the prospect of financial instability, Hafiz embarked on a journey fueled by passion and conviction, carving a path where music became not just a vocation but a sacred calling.
It was amidst the soft glow of moonlit nights and the echo of Sufi chants that Hafiz found his muse, enraptured by the enchanting melodies of ustad Ghulam Ahmad Sofi (Amme Sofi) at a Sufiyana mehfil in 1967. In that transformative moment, a young boy’s destiny intertwined with the harmonious threads of tradition, as Hafiz pledged his allegiance to the art of song.
With the harmonium now nestled in his grasp, the pendulum of fate swung anew, yet the question remained: who would unravel its secrets to him? “I traversed the expanse of singers and instrumentalists, seeking the elusive maestros who could unveil the harmonium’s mysteries,” Hafiz recounts, the journey fraught with the cadence of determination.
The chapters that followed bore the weight of equal hardship. By the cusp of 1977, Hafiz found himself beckoned to the grand stages of Sufi gatherings, albeit as a mere ‘filler’. The coin that trickled in, a paltry sum, mere echoes of appreciation in the grand symphony of life. “Sufiana singers were pariahs then, shadows lurking in the margins of society, starved of respect, battling the tempest of survival,” Hafiz muses, his voice a vessel of retrospection amidst the chorus of memories.

In the dawn of 1979, Hafiz’s talents found a platform on the illustrious stage of Radio Kashmir, marking the inception of a luminous career that would span decades and that earned him an approved A grade artist .
It was in those moments of introspection that Hafiz sought solace in the wisdom of mentors like Mohammad Sultan Matoo, finding renewed strength to navigate the tumultuous currents of artistic expression. Through trials and triumphs, Hafiz’s melodies resonated across the landscape of Kashmir, weaving tales of love, longing, and resilience into the fabric of its cultural tapestry.
As the dark clouds of conflict cast their shadow over the valley in 1989, Hafiz stood as a beacon of hope amidst the chaos, his songs serving as whispers of peace in a land torn asunder by strife. Through the darkest nights of despair, his voice echoed across the mountains, a testament to the indomitable spirit of Kashmiri resilience.
For Hafiz, the true measure of success lay not in the laurels heaped upon him but in the legacy he left behind – a legacy of passion, perseverance, and unwavering dedication to the art form that defined his existence. As the melodies of his songs continue to echo through the valleys and alleys of Kashmir, Abdul Rashid Hafiz stands as a testament to the enduring power of music to transcend boundaries and unite hearts in harmony.
Abdul Rashid Hafiz’s contribution to Kashmiri folk singing transcends mere melody; it embodies a unique style that blends tradition with innovation, breathing new life into age-old compositions. His mastery of the Sufiyana genre, characterized by its ethereal harmonies and soul-stirring lyrics, sets him apart as a luminary in the realm of Kashmiri music.
“pyari cham na nynder yiwan,” the first hit folk song of Abdul Rashid Hafiz, became the clarion call that heralded his ascent to musical prominence.
With each note resonating like a gentle breeze through the verdant landscapes of his homeland, Hafiz captured the essence of Kashmiri folk and chhakri music in its purest form. The haunting refrain of “pyari cham na nynder yiwan” echoed across the meadows and mountains, weaving a spellbinding tapestry of longing and love that transcended time and space.
The ethereal melodies of Rashid Hafiz, woven with the threads of tradition, resonate deeply within the valleys of Kashmir. With each verse, he unfurls the tapestry of emotion, binding hearts in the eternal cadence of his songs. From the poignant “Yar Dod Naar Koth” to the soul-stirring “Dilbaro Mei Dilas,” he emerges as the bard of the land, his voice a testament to the enduring spirit of Kashmiri folk and Sufi music.
But Hafiz’s journey did not end with a single song; it was merely the beginning of a musical odyssey that would span decades. With each subsequent performance, he delved deeper into the mystical realms of Sufi poetry, channeling the divine through his soul-stirring melodies.
As his voice soared to new heights, resonating with the fervor of a devotee lost in prayer, Hafiz’s reputation as a master of Sufi singing spread like wildfire, reaching every nook and corner of the Kashmir Valley. His songs became anthems of solace for a people besieged by strife, offering moments of respite amidst the chaos of everyday life.
With each verse, Hafiz breathed life into the timeless verses of mystic poets, infusing them with his own unique blend of passion and devotion. His performances became spiritual experiences, drawing listeners into a realm where the boundaries between the earthly and the divine blurred into insignificance.

The following year, the Ahad Zargar Award adorned his mantle, a testament to his enduring legacy and artistic finesse.
Yet, amidst the glittering array of honors, it was the pinnacle of recognition in 2014 that illuminated the zenith of Hafiz’s illustrious career—the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, conferred upon him by none other than the esteemed President of India. It was a moment of triumph, a culmination of years of dedication and devotion to the Sufiana tradition.
In the annals of Kashmiri music, Hafiz’s legacy shines bright, a testament to the enduring power of song to uplift the human spirit and transcend the confines of time and space. Through his music, he has carved a place for himself in the hearts of his people, a place where his voice will echo for eternity, like the timeless melodies of the Kashmiri hills.
