Mumbai, Oct 15: Veteran film and television actor Pankaj Dheer, best remembered for his iconic portrayal of Karna in B.R. Chopra’s legendary television series Mahabharat, passed away in Mumbai on Tuesday after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 68.
According to family sources, the actor had been ailing for some time and had recently undergone surgery. His funeral was held this evening at Vile Parle (W), Mumbai, in the presence of family members, friends, and colleagues from the film and television fraternity.
Pankaj Dheer leaves behind an indelible mark on Indian entertainment with a career spanning over four decades across film, television, and theatre. Apart from Mahabharat, he earned acclaim for his performances in popular serials such as Chandrakanta, Yug, Sasural Simar Ka, Badho Bahu, and Kanoon.
He also appeared in several Bollywood films including Sadak, Baadshah, Tahalka, Soldier, Mr. Bond, and Qayamat. Beyond his on-screen achievements, Dheer co-founded Visage Studioz and launched the Abbhinnay Acting Academy to train aspiring actors.
Among his many television appearances, Pankaj Dheer also starred in the noted TV serial “Yeh Zindagi Hai Gulshan”, produced and directed by Mushtaq Bala, further showcasing his versatility and dedication to meaningful storytelling on screen.

The actor is survived by his wife and son, actor Nikitin Dheer, who continues his father’s legacy in the film industry. Tributes have been pouring in from across the entertainment world, remembering Dheer as a gracious, disciplined, and powerful performer who inspired generations of artists.
