Srinagar, October 9: Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) Jammu and Kashmir State President Vivek Bali has strongly condemned the alleged assault on Kashmiri youth Fahim Nazir in Connaught Place, New Delhi, and called for an impartial investigation into the incident.
In a statement issued here, Bali said that, according to media reports, Fahim Nazir, who identified himself as a resident of Srinagar, was allegedly manhandled by individuals described as Congress supporters outside a restaurant in Connaught Place. Nazir reportedly stated that he was expressing his political views and supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also denied abusing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Reacting to the incident, Bali said that political differences could never justify violence or intimidation. He emphasised that disagreements over political opinions should be addressed through peaceful discussion and democratic debate rather than physical force.
“If a citizen expresses an opinion or raises questions, the democratic response should be to engage with him politically and peacefully, not to resort to physical force,” Bali said.
He further stated that the allegations raised serious concerns about freedom of expression, political tolerance and respect for democratic values. He added that if the allegations were established, those responsible should be identified and appropriate legal action taken in accordance with the law.
“No political party or its workers should be above the law,” Bali said.
Expressing concern over the alleged targeting of a Kashmiri youth in the national capital, the SBSP leader stressed that every citizen, regardless of region, religion or political affiliation, deserved dignity, safety and equal protection under the law.
Bali reiterated that democracy thrives on constructive debate, mutual respect and the freedom to express differing opinions. He called for a fair and impartial investigation to establish the facts and ensure that justice is delivered in accordance with the law.
“Democracy is strengthened by debate and dissent, not by intimidation or violence. The law must take its course, and the facts of the incident should be investigated impartially,” he added.
