The Wakf official said that the amount was directly transferred to the bank accounts of beneficiaries.

This amount was in addition to the financial assistance we provide them every month,” Secretary Wakf Board Showkat Beigh said.

There are 650 families registered with Wakf Board, who get financial assistance from BaitulMaal established by the Wakf.

He said that additional financial assistance was provided after it was felt that amid nation-wide lockdown, these families should not face any kind of difficulty.

“We are aware that people are following health and prohibitory orders in letter in spirit. So, we deemed it proper to provide additional financial assistance to these beneficiaries so that they can meet their basic needs,” he added.

“The Wakf Board has also contributed an amount of Rs one crore towards the efforts being undertaken by the government to prevent and contain COVID-19 in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” Beigh said.

The cheque was presented to Lieutenant Governor by Advisor Farooq Khan who also holds the charge of Haj and Auqaf Department.

Beigh said that the Wakf is also helping students who belong to destitute families to pursue their educational careers.
