Kupwara, Jan 16, KNT: Police in Kupwara have arrested a woman and recovered a large quantity of narcotic substance during a naka checking operation carried out in Gulgam area of the district.

Officials said that during naka checking at Magery Mohalla, Gulgam in Kupwara, a police party apprehended a woman identified as Nayeema Begum, wife of Irshad Ahmad Mir, a native of Karnah and presently putting up at Magery Mohalla, Gulgam.

During her personal search, police claimed to have recovered 2 kilograms and 200 grams of a heroin-like substance from her possession. The recovery was made on the spot, following which the accused was taken into custody.

In this connection, a case FIR No. 13 of 2026 under Sections 8, 21 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered at Police Station Kupwara, and further investigation has been initiated.

Police officials said the investigation will focus on establishing the source of the recovered contraband and identifying possible forward and backward linkages involved in the narcotics network. More recoveries and arrests are not being ruled out as the probe progresses.

Authorities reiterated that strict action will continue against drug trafficking and those involved in the illegal trade of narcotics, particularly in border and transit areas of north Kashmir.
