Doda, Sep 15 : The body of a 21-year-old woman who had allegedly jumped into the Chenab River from Shiva Bridge near Prem Nagar in Doda, was recovered from a dam site on Tuesday after 10 days.

Officials told the body of Payal Devi, daughter of Krishan Lal, resident of Korara, Mohalla Tehsil Doda, was spotted near the dam site downstream and later retrieved by police and SDRF teams.

Payal had allegedly jumped into the Chenab from Shiva Dal Bridge near Prem Nagar on September 5, after which a massive search operation was launched by police, SDRF and local volunteers.

A video purportedly shot moments before the incident, showing locals trying to dissuade her, had gone viral on social media. In the video she was heard saying “Bye-bye Papa” to her father over phone.

According to her father, Payal had gone to a mela and later complained of feeling unwell. She was on her way back when she ran towards the river and jumped.

After completion of medico-legal formalities, the body was handed over to family for last rites.

Police have taken cognizance of the matter.
