International Women’s Day (IWD) will be observed on March 8, 2025, under the theme ‘Accelerate Action.’ This annual event recognizes women’s contributions across various fields, raises awareness about gender equality, and promotes empowerment. It serves as a platform to highlight social, economic, cultural, and political achievements while advocating for women’s rights worldwide.

International Women’s Day: Origin
The roots of International Women’s Day trace back to the early 20th century, when labor movements protested against poor working conditions amid rapid industrialisation. Key milestones include the 1908 march of 15,000 women in New York City demanding better rights and the establishment of National Woman’s Day in the United States in 1909. In 1910, Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of International Women’s Day, leading to its first celebration in multiple countries in 1911.

A defining moment occurred in 1917 when Russian women went on strike, solidifying March 8 as the date for IWD. The day also became a platform for anti-war demonstrations during World War I. The United Nations formally recognized International Women’s Day in 1975, further cementing its global significance.

Beyond celebration, IWD highlights gender disparities and advocates for change. It underscores ongoing challenges such as economic inequality, political underrepresentation, and gender-based violence. The day serves as a reminder of the progress made and the steps needed to achieve gender equality.

IWD fosters global solidarity among women from diverse backgrounds, encouraging discussions on policies and social norms that impact their lives. Despite progress, significant barriers remain, making International Women’s Day 2025 a crucial opportunity to assess achievements, recognize challenges, and renew commitments toward a more inclusive future.
