World Environment Day 2025 is not just an Event but serves as a call to action for all of us to take responsibility for our planet and work together towards a future free of plastic pollution
World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, is the United Nations’ flagship day for environmental action. This year Republic of Korea will host the global observance, focusing on the urgent issue of plastic pollution.
World Environment Day 2025 Theme””Ending Plastic Pollution”
Why Plastic Pollution Matters
The world produces over 430 million tonnes of plastic each year, with two-thirds of it being short-lived products that soon become waste. Much of this waste ends up in our oceans, harming marine life and entering the human food chain. Addressing plastic pollution is crucial for achieving several Sustainable Development Goals, including those related to climate action, sustainable production and consumption, and the protection of seas and oceans.
Jeju Island: A Model for Sustainability
The celebrations will take place on Jeju Island, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site known for its commitment to environmental sustainability. Jeju has introduced innovative policies to combat plastic pollution, such as the disposable cup deposit system, and has set a goal to become free of plastic pollution by 2040.
Global Commitment to Action
In addition to the World Environment Day events, the Republic of Korea will host the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on plastic pollution later in the year. This session aims to develop a legally binding international instrument to address plastic pollution, including in the marine environment.
How You Can Participate
Individuals and communities worldwide can contribute by reducing plastic use, participating in local clean-up events, supporting policies that promote sustainable alternatives, and spreading awareness about the importance of ending plastic pollution.
