Jammu, Jan 30: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday said Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of non-violence, truth and human dignity remain relevant for the world at a time marked by global uncertainty, conflicts and climate challenges.

Addressing an an event organised by the Gandhi Global Family, Sinha paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and freedom fighters who followed the Gandhian path during India’s independence movement.

He said the gathering at the historic venue was not just a commemorative event but a symbol of peace and hope for Jammu and Kashmir. The event, he added, reflected the enduring influence of Gandhian values that have guided generations.

Sinha said the world was passing through a period of uncertainty, marked by geopolitical tensions, social divisions and economic realignments. Referring to recent global developments, he cited the finalisation of a major trade agreement between India and the European Union on January 27 after negotiations spanning two decades.

He said tensions were visible between nations, within societies and among people, and warned that the world appeared to be waiting for a spark that could disrupt existing relationships.

“If war is brewing in one corner of the world and climate change is challenging the future of humanity, then the voice of Mahatma Gandhi gives strength in such times,” Sinha said.

He said Gandhi was not merely a leader of the past but a guiding light for the present world. His vision of non-violence, truth and self-determination, Sinha said, was as relevant today as it was during India’s freedom struggle.

Quoting Gandhi’s writings in Harijan dated March 16, 1947, Sinha recalled his assertion that while God is one, religions are many, likening it to a tree with countless leaves.

The Lieutenant Governor said Gandhi believed that the protection of human dignity, equality, social justice and youth rights formed the foundation for resolving even the most difficult challenges.

With courage and moral clarity, he said, Gandhi chose the path of truth and self-determination, leaving behind principles that continue to guide humanity.(KNS)
