New York, Nov — Newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani delivered a powerful and defiant victory speech after securing the city’s top office, declaring he would “never apologise” for his identity and values while issuing a direct challenge to former US President Donald Trump.
Mamdani, who becomes the first Muslim mayor in New York City’s history, proudly embraced his background and political beliefs in his address to supporters.
“I am Muslim. I am a Democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologise for any of this,” Mamdani said, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.
In a pointed message to Trump, who had previously criticized Mamdani’s candidacy, the new mayor issued a dramatic call-out.
“Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up,” he said. “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
Mamdani pledged to focus on economic justice, particularly housing issues, vowing to hold negligent landlords accountable and protect tenants across the city.
“The Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants,” he said.
The mayor-elect’s speech touched on themes of identity, solidarity, and inclusion, resonating with supporters who celebrated the historic nature of his win. He also vowed to work for all New Yorkers, regardless of background.
Mamdani’s election marks a significant moment in the city’s political landscape, symbolizing a generational and ideological shift, and placing him at the forefront of progressive leadership on a national stage.
