Srinagar, June 19: At least 16 people were reported killed in a series of Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Friday, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA), amid escalating regional tensions and the postponement of planned US-Iran talks in Switzerland.
The Israeli military confirmed that it was carrying out ongoing operations against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, saying the strikes were aimed at militant infrastructure and fighters. The attacks were among the most intense reported in recent weeks and mainly affected areas in the Nabatieh district.
The escalation comes at a sensitive time, as diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran suffered a setback following the postponement of talks that were expected to take place in Switzerland. US Vice President JD Vance delayed his trip, while reports indicated that the worsening security situation in Lebanon contributed to the uncertainty surrounding the negotiations.
The renewed violence has raised concerns over the future of a fragile US-Iran understanding aimed at reducing tensions across the region, including in Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained that Israeli forces will continue operations against Hezbollah and remain in parts of southern Lebanon until security objectives are achieved.
The latest developments underscore the growing challenges facing diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, with fears that continued hostilities could further destabilize the region and derail ongoing peace initiatives.
